The Counterfactual... Year of Barbelo
2003...
Tom Coates
Preface, I'm not a particularly brilliant creative writer so I'm going
to suggest something and then retire away relatively gracefully to see what people make of it. This particularly interested
me because my recent reintroduction to the Gnostic Barbelites reminded me of all the inherently Christian bits of ideology
that still exist in my morals and preconceptions even as a staunch atheist. So this is an attempt at getting people to think
differently in terms of alternate histories - ways the world could have gone - with the objective of helping us to realise
the contingency of our own world, it's value systems and beliefs...
Year of Barbelo 196 AD:
The second century
Barbelite Christians believed that human bodies were vessels for fallen fragments of divine higher powers. Believing that
reproduction only drove the cycle of imprisonment, they ritually consumed semen (and
menses, according to some sources); they believed that the life energy bound therein would be bound
to the soul of the one who consumed them, and be able to escape this world with the eater's soul upon death. If
the eater had not gained enough energy and wisdom, he would be trapped by the Rulers and reincarnated again on Earth.
The Barbelites used sexual fluids as the sacraments of the Eucharist.
The suffering of Christ was re-enacted whenever a new being was born. The Barbelites
used non-reproductive sex to re-enact the descent of spirit into matter without actually trapping the spirit in physical form.
The Barbelites, believing Yaldabaoth (Yahweh [YHWH]) was the vile bastard son of Barbelo,
the pure reflection of the true God's conscious, felt that, by the desist of humanity, they would transfer
Barbelo's stolen energy back to her, weakening the mad, tyrranical Yaldabaoth. Needless to say, the Barbelites
were none too beloved by less eccentric religious groups. They were wiped out en masse, courtesy the
Christians.
But what if they weren't wiped out. What if - instead - Barbelite
Gnosticism became the major faith of the Western World - eventually taken up by Emperor Constantine
to reinspire his empire. What if Barbelite Gnosticism was a state religion...
Year of Barbelo 2003:
What kind of world could have made the Barbelites 'win'. What kind of world would exist today
if they had become the major religion of the Western world....
Qalyn (prev. Qualyn) 00:11
/ 06.09.03 Well, Tom, before we can really get rolling, we'd have to take into account the mystes of the Druidic Boibel-Loth,
which (reputedly) contained encoded instructions on all manner of statecraft pertinent to Celtic affairs, and its impact on
orthodox Barbelist thought.
rizla mission 19:24 / 06.09.03 Well a fairly inescapable suggestion is gonna
be;
A sect which exists in direct opposition to the idea of reproductive sex becomes the dominant religious force
in the Western world?
..there aren't gonna be many caucasians around in 2003..
Tom Coates 22:33 / 06.09.03 Well Christianity is pretty against people having sex outside wedlock, but
all the evidence is that people have been doing it pretty much since the beginning of time. You might use as a basis for any
counterfactual thinking that Catholic priests are supposed to be celibate and married to Christ - it could be that in order
for the cult to have 'won' it would have to split into a priest class and a follower class, where the priests tried to persuade
people to have as much non-reproductive sex as possible, lowering birth rates dramatically but far from totally - people having
ten children - four of which died - now have four - one of whom dies.
Discrimination on grounds of sexual act would be dramatically lower initially at least and indeed in a subsequent renaissance
that might happen again. The Church might have remained in the hands of the people rather than become institutionalised to
the same extent or it might not.
STDs would be much higher, but prostate cancer much lower. The status of women could have been dramatically higher earlier,
both because of the mother goddess and because of the celebration of less invasive penetrative sex... So with those things
in your head, WHAT COMES NEXT?
Tom Coates 22:40 / 06.09.03 PS. Also "Caucasian"? If you're talking in
the colloquial "white" sense of the word, then I'm not sure that the middle eastern population we're starting with fall under
that classification - and if you're talking about the stricter now-out-of-use scientific classification, then you're also
talking about people who came to undertake many other religions including but not limited to some of the peoples of India,
many muslims and peoples of North Africa.
rizla mission 00:14 / 07.09.03 Fair point. Poor choice of words.
I guess maybe "European" is closer to what I meant.
I still think though that, since according to the Barbelite cosmology
childbirth isn't just frowned upon - it's actually ultimate sin which the whole religion is organised in opposition to - it
would be pretty difficult for the leaders of the religion to tolerate any births within the ranks of the faithful..
Possibilities:
i.maybe people who had children would be banished from the religious community, creating parallel religious and secular
societies. I suppose the Barbelite ideology would have to be persuasive enough to convince a certain percentage of the secular
offspring to take it up again, thus ensuring that it doesn't die out..
ii.maybe, as a more extreme version of what
you've suggested, an extremely small carefully monitored birth rate would be permitted in the name of self-preservation and
perpetuating the religion..
(I know I'm maybe going off on the wrong tack on this, but it's fun trying to get my head
around how a sect that prohibits breeding could succeed in becoming a dominant world religion..)
Tom Coates 12:09
/ 08.09.03 So try to think about some of the shifts they'd have had to make to keep the core message intactish while permitting
them to become the dominant religion...
grant 23:05 / 08.09.03 I can easily picture a world where STDs
bear the taint of sin.
What would be interesting, however, would be the institution of marriage, which is seen as
the cornerstone of society. Human emotions being what they are, I imagine serial monogamy might become the norm -- and/or
massive orgies, probably during major carnivals, like Mardi Gras.
Also, for the Barbelo-gnostics to be in a position
of authority, the Bible as we know it would not exist. Significant portions of the New Testament would be different, primarly
the omission Paul's writings. These are the ones that set up the prohibitions surrounding marriage, but also have something
to say about homosexuality, as well as setting out some of what we know about the Trinity, and the rule of celibate priesthood.
John would stay -- weird visions of the End Times. The Whore of Babylon, however, would
have a whole different vibe.
I think in this world, prominent citizens might be required to "make face" by having
a same-sex consort.
Prostitutes would probably be mainstream working class, if not considered elite professionals.
I imagine there'd also be a substantial historical precedent for sex-slavery. Like, maybe not in 2003, but up to the 1800s
at least and probably much later.
Racial boundaries, as a result, might be a lot harder to police. This may have an
opposite effect from what you'd expect -- ideas of racial supremacy might be even stronger, especially with the "no children"
meme adding to the opprobrium heaped on the offspring of slave-master unions. So possibly a minority snow-white sex-worker/priest
class, with a lot of mixed race middle class folks.
I'm not sure if democracy would catch on in quite the same way,
but I imagine queens would be far more common, and women would never have had to march to get the vote.
Populations
would definitely be smaller. I wonder... Christianity might have spread a lot faster, if the sexuality was attached to the
idea of eternal salvation and a single, omnipotent, loving God. Hmm.
The current debate on abortion would be almost
identical, only with scientists & "rationalists" taking a minority "pro-life" view, and fundamentalist Christians taking
the close majority "pro-choice" view.
The relationship between the Church and scientific rationalism would also be
somewhat different, probably, since gnosticism in all forms is based on personal revelation, not authoritative truth. Galileo
might never have been persecuted. Hard to say, though, since we monkeys seem to like authorities.
I wonder, also,
what urges would be repressed -- y'know, Freud's big thing was, "Hey, sex - it's pretty important! And we don't like to admit
we're thinking about it!"
What would the Barbelo-Freud discover?
grant 16:49 / 09.09.03 Actually,
if Emperor Constantine took up Barbelite Gnosticism, it would find a way to become authoritarian pretty darn quickly.
Most
of the authoritarianism in the early church can be traced to him, the first Christian emperor. (Or, more properly, "Christian").
bjacques 16:03 / 15.09.03 Is Gnosticism the source of the
Jorge
Luis Borges
quote that "copulation and mirrors are both abominable, because they increase the number of men?"
But I think an anti-reproductive religion would have been self-limiting.
The Shakers, (SEE MOTHER ANN LEE)
in the northern US of the 1700s, were also
against sex, and are pretty much extinct. If Constantine had championed it, it would probably have been a religion practiced
publicly and in the Emperor's court, while people practiced their real religion privately, and it would have died with him,
as did Ikhnaton's solar monotheism and Julian's "Apostasy."
But since preference for barbelite Christianity would
have come at the cost of the "our" Christianity, then the latter might not have gotten the critical boost it needed to become
one of the Big Three monotheisms. There's an excellent book by Karen Armstrong called something like
the History of God, supposing Islam, Judaism and Christianity arose and consolidated their hold in the Axial Age,
about 400BC-600AD, when general historical conditions favored it. That also suggests a niche existed and that a later Emperor
might have seen which way the wind was blowing and championed regular Christianity with roughly similar results.
So
the world would have been very different, but still not very barbelithic, except that that religion would probably have about
as many adherents as Jehovah's Witnesses.
I like this, I just wish I knew enough about Gnosticism to imagine the alternate
world instead of just playing, er, Devil's Advocate.
grant 21:04 / 15.09.03 "Gnosticism" is a single label
for a bunch of different strands of belief -- Barbelite Gnosticism being just one of 'em.
Emphasis
is on personal knowledge (gnosis) of the divine as opposed to scripture and traditional/authoritative sources of revelation.
There *is* a tradition (a set of beliefs) within these gnostic strains, elements
of which were accepted or rejected by various groups throughout history. So that set of beliefs is by no means uniform from
group to group.
The main thing all the gnostics have in common is that they lost out to orthodox Christianity
(as political entities) at about the same time Constantine adopted the faith.
I wonder if the Barbelites would have
been more plural and less monolithic than the version of Christianity that came to the fore in the 300s -- less
apt to condemn heretics, laying the foundation for a far broader church.
bjacques 00:53 /
16.09.03 Thanks! I'd picked up a few strands from reading tons of Borges' stories;
last week I was amazed to see Gnostic themes in Orson Welles' version of Kafka's
"The Trial." Anyway...
You're probably right about a kinder, gentler Christianity resulting. A possible
example is the Ottoman Empire whose state religion was of course Islam, but it was a more tolerant Islam than that practiced
in Saudi Arabia. Non-Muslims were welcome there as long as they paid taxes and didn't stir up trouble. There was a lot of
intellectual ferment in the Ottoman Empire.
Oh. Fertility images, like the classic Demeter
and her Cornucopia, used a lot in American art in the 1800s, would probably be unknown. Maybe Barbelo-Freud would discover
repression of fertility drives? Also, the ecstatic side of Christianity would be more respectable, and probably de rigeur,
but maybe you'd only have to fake it on festival days. A dark side of a religion like this could be outbreaks of mass panics,
fundamentalist frenzy. Maybe the state would make use of them and channel them into participatory public executions like the
"salvagings" of Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," only people wouldn't pull on a long rope but instead tear the victims apart themselves.
Burning
Man would be government-subsidized, and have darker connotations, at least in states that had the death penalty...
at
the scarwash 03:26 / 30.09.03 Religions of aesceticism, if they are to thrive, seem to very quickly generate more
easily-consumable versions of themselves. A good example of this is perhaps Pure-Land Buddhism, which offers potential enlightenment
to those who can't find it though the path of wisdom, or in other words, by doing the damned hard (and selfish) work of the
aescetic. Even Catholicism as it is today would be a good example. My impression of Catholic doctrine is that the real O.G.'s
of the Catholic world are found amongst the priesthood and the orders; the laiety have their place, but they are somehow less
holy than their clergy. It's not that they actually could or should all be ordained--they are in the position intended for
them.
So anyway, I'd imagine that the Barbelo-Gnostics would probably evolve a similar system: a real hard-ass Barbelo-Gnosis
for the expert, and a Barbelo-lite Home Edition (TM) for the people too concerned with raising crops to feed the priesthood
to be able to go off and be awesome pervert-heretics themselves.

From the General Collections Library of Congress
American Notes: Travels
in America, 1750-1920 comprises 253 published narratives by Americans and foreign visitors recounting their travels in the
colonies and the United States and their observations and opinions about American peoples, places, and society from about
1750 to 1920. Also included is the thirty-two-volume set of manuscript sources entitled Early Western Travels, 1748-1846,
published between 1904 and 1907 after diligent compilation by the distinguished historian and secretary of the Wisconsin Historical
Society Reuben Gold Thwaites. Although many of the authors represented in American Notes are not widely known, the collection
includes works by major figures such as Matthew Arnold, Fredrika Bremer, William Cullen Bryant, François-René de Chateaubriand,
William Cobbett, James Fenimore Cooper, J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur, Charles Dickens, Washington Irving, Benjamin Henry
Latrobe, Sir Charles Lyell, William Lyon Mackenzie, André Michaux, Thomas Nuttall, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Robert Louis
Stevenson. The narratives in American Notes therefore range from the unjustly neglected to the justly famous, and from classics
of the genre to undiscovered gems. Together, they build a mosaic portrait of a young nation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people
and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's
National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a
contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record
of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library

SOPHIA OF WISDOM III THE SOPHIA OF ALL SOPHIA OF WISDOMS AKA CAROLINE E. KENNEDY________________________________
NOVEMBER 17, 2006
MARY MAGDALENE & JESUS The picture shown on this shows a Time traveler and Ninjas
in the back ground. And there is a woman who is a Tree standing on the steps...This is Carolyn Bessette and the Harlot Jesus
is looking at is Nina Alves...I have other pictures to prove it....
WHO WAS MARY MAGDALENE?
At the Crucifixion
and Resurrection, there is a mysterious woman who is present, named Mary Magdalene. Some say she was the wife of Jesus.
Others
say she was a prostitute freed by Jesus. Still others say she was an esoteric figure of a secret royal line in France.
Just who was this mysterious figure?
The Biblical evidence identifies a woman who anoints Jesus with an alabaster
box at the house of a Pharisee named Simon as "a woman of the city who was a sinner."[Lk 7:37] Jesus then forgives her all
her sins, which sins He says, "are many." In the very next section, we are told that Mary Magdalene, "out of whom He had cast
seven demons," had begun following Jesus and the Apostles [Lk 8:2]. Jesus says that because the woman had been forgiven much,
she loved Him much [Lk 7:47].
Many have assumed this woman is Mary Magdalene and that she was some sort of prostitute
because "woman of the city" could have that meaning in some situations. The text does not explicitly identify the woman
as Mary Magdalene or as a prostitute, however. Luke does say Mary had had seven demons cast out of her and responded
by following Jesus. It must have been clear to Luke as he wrote that the strong similarity between these two women
and their juxtaposition in immediate succession would lead many to identify the two as the same person. The gospels often
go to some pains to avoid such confusion, for example, when John speaks of "Judas" at the Last Supper and adds, "not
the Iscariot." So by failing to clarify that Mary Magdalene is not the same woman, Luke in effect is allowing us to
make that identification.
This, if correct, would lead us to a second conclusion very rapidly, for the anointing
of Jesus is REQUIRED by an express command of Jesus to be recorded whenever the gospel is preached [Mt 26:13]. Therefore,
because the ONLY anointing Luke records is the one by that "woman of the city," we must conclude that this is the
same anointing as we see recorded in the other gospels. Note what the other accounts add:
The anointing is in
the house of Simon THE LEPER of BETHANY and the box contained "VERY PRECIOUS" ointment [Mt 26:6-13]. This anointing of
Jesus is followed WITHOUT A BREAK by Judas betraying Jesus, implying a direct link between the anointing and Judas' decision
[Mt 26:14-15].
Mark adds the fact that this ointment in Simon's house was of a very precious substance called
"SPIKENARD"--but someone complains, "Why was this WASTE of the ointment made? For it might have been SOLD FOR MORE THAN
300 PENCE."[Mk 14:3-5] That equals a YEAR'S WAGES in those days, or roughly $20,000 in modern terms.
THIS IS CAROLYN
BESSETTE WHO SLIPPED IN BECAUSE MARY MAGDALENE KNEW THAT JESUS WAS HER FLAVIUS (A MAGICAL POWER)
Obviously, this was
a black-market ointment, something ILLEGAL, such as oil used to anoint someone KING.
JESUS WAS ABOVE KINGS...HE
WAS TO ANOINT THEM NOT BE ANOINTED....THIS IS WHAT CAUSED HIS DEATH.....SO HE DIED FOR HER SINS AND HER SINS ALONE.....
John,
at last, completes the story: The woman who anoints Jesus is none other than Mary of Bethany, the SISTER OF MARTHA AND
LAZARUS. So the woman was named MARY after all. And because she and her sister are supposed to serve guests in this
house, a house we can now identify as the house of Simon the Pharisee, a "leper" (which some say was a coded way of
identifying a person who advocated independence from Rome, and who was ostracized like a leper on the Sanhedrin), we must
see Simon as the FATHER of Mary, Martha and Lazarus.
Now it becomes clear why these three siblings are living
in the same house; it is the family estate. We know that Lazarus is wealthy when we are told of the huge crowds that
gather when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. Bethany was on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives --prime real
estate. Yet Lazarus' family owns a large enough estate to have this huge throng there ("the WHOLE WORLD has gone after
Him"), and a private tomb on the property of a PHARISEE who would want to maintain ritual purity by keeeping his house
as far from a tomb as possible.
Simon is a wealthy Pharisee living on choice property near Jerusalem with a house
big enough to sleep several adult men and women. It is his daughter who anoints Jesus with contraband royal ointment in
his presence at a dinner in honor of his son Lazarus.
This explains why a Pharisee would allow a "woman of the
city who was a sinner" into his house and let her POUR HER OINTMENT ALL OVER JESUS AND ONTO HIS FLOOR. Pharisees would
NEVER permit a STRANGER to enter their home who might be "unclean" and pour oil of UNKNOWN origin onto their floor.
(She wipes the oil on Jesus' feet also.) For the ritually pure Pharisees this was anathema. But if this is his very own
daughter, a woman he knew, and if he knew exactly where that oil had come from, then the mystery vanishes.
THE
ANOINTING OIL
So where did that oil come from?
The term "SPIKE-nard" is very misleading. The Greek actually
calls it "GENUINE nard"--which the translators change to "SPIKE-nard" on the assumption that some copyist made a mistake.
But the correct reading of "GENUINE" has awesome implications. It signifies that this was the GENUINE anointing oil.
In other words, THE GENUINE royal anointing oil of the priests and kings. The oil of KING DAVID. Of the MESSIAH, the ANOINTED
One.
No wonder Jesus insisted they include this story in every telling of the gospel. This was His official anointing
as Priest and King.
[The ancient origin of this alabaster box of oil is detailed in an extensive audio/printed
report called "THE SECRETS OF PETRA." It is far too much to cover on the web. Copies can be ordered via our NEWS &
UPDATES page.]
But could a fallen woman anoint Jesus Priest and King?
MARY "THE MAGDALENE" AND HER FATHER
NICODEMUS
Mary and Martha are grown women living in their father's house on a large estate. This is most unusual.
Ordinarily the only way a woman would return to her father's house was by being widowed or divorced or if her husband
had gone on a long journey and left her otherwise alone.
The Talmud has a curious story about a man named Nicodemus.
It says he was one of the richest men in Jewish history. This Nicodemus had two daughters named Mary and Martha: Martha
was a widow who returned to her father Nicodemus' house, while Mary had married an extremely rich man and had brought
him a huge dowry. The Talmud does not say why Mary was living at home, but we may assume her husband travelled a great
deal.
The Talmud places this story 30 years AFTER the Biblical Nicodemus-- a generation later. Tradition says
that Nicodemus and his whole family were ARRESTED because of their Christianity. All were exiled to Gaul by 37 AD,
except Nicodemus, who is said to have seen them sail off from Caesarea. Yet the Talmud seems to place the family a generation
later.
But according to Psalm 109, people convicted of capital crimes--and the book of Acts says that professing
Christianity had become a capital crime--had their NAMES BLOTTED OUT "unto the second generation." So it was FORBIDDEN
for the rabbis to publicly discuss or write about someone who had been blotted out, as Nicodemus and his family had been.
By the shifting of the "time" of the Talmudic stories 30 years later, rabbis could write about blotted-out events
during the "forbidden" period. We have many Talmudic stories about Jesus, Lazarus and other blotted-out New Testament
figures, which also exhibit a similar time-shift.
It appears, therefore, that the Talmud has coyly "resurrected" some
forbidden history of the family of Nicodemus and Mary Magdalene, which shows she was married to one of the richest
men in her world. Who could that be?
MARY AND JOSEPH, THE "OTHER HOLY FAMILY"...
The term "Nicodemus"
means "innocent of blood" and is hardly a name one receives at birth. So "Simon" might well be his given name. When Jesus
is condemned by the Sanhedrin, the vote has to be UNANIMOUS. Yet we know that two members, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus
do not feel Jesus is guilty. This can only mean that Caiaphas the High Priest held their proxies and cast their votes
for them.
The Talmud and other sources reveal that Joseph and Nicodemus were wealthy men who travelled far from
Jerusalem, in the metals and grain trades respectively. Because they were not always available to vote, they had to
give their proxies to the High Priest.
Nicodemus was a "RULER" of the people on the Sanhedrin, a man of great
wealth (he held a monopoly on grain in Jerusalem). His friend Joseph of Arimathea was in similar circumstances. Undoubtedly,
both men often travelled together for months at a time.
But why did they bury Jesus together?
The Jewish
law of burial left a man UNCLEAN for handling a dead body --which would have prevented these men from eating the Passover,
if we accept John's gospel [Jn 18:28]. But the NEXT OF KIN were REQUIRED to bury their family members. That means
both men were related to Jesus.
Catholic tradition makes Joseph the UNCLE of Jesus' mother, Mary, but they also
say he was YOUNGER than Mary. The Church has evolved a view of Mary as staying a virgin AFTER giving birth to Jesus, and
this led it to elevate Mary to a semi-divine status Rome feels is incompatible with her having any siblings. The idea
is that her mother Anna had no other children but Mary. But the starting point of this odd logic is Rome's belief
in Mary remaining virgin AFTER giving birth to Jesus, an idea the Bible goes to great lengths to refute:
The Bible
declares, for example, that Mary lost her virginity at the birth of Jesus [Lk 2:23; Is 66:9; Rev 12:4], had sex with her
husband [Mt 1:25], and was mother to many other children after Jesus [Mt 12:46-47; 13:55-57; 27:56,61; 28:1; Mk 6:
3-4; and many other similar passages]. To maintain the myth of Mary keeping her virginity even after giving birth, Rome
decided in 1871 that Mary had herself had a miraculous birth without original sin and without any siblings. This meant
Joseph of Arimathea had to be pushed back another generation BEFORE Mary, even though he was younger than Mary and
was said to outlive her by 15 or 20 years.
This confusion vanishes in light of the Biblical verses cited above, which
removes the need to falsify Mary's family structure. Joseph was her younger brother, uncle to Jesus. When their father,
Heli Joachim, died, Joseph took over the family's seat on the Jewish Sanhedrin. If this were not so, Jesus could not
be David's heir. The "honored seat" Joseph held on the Council was, of course, the seat of the House of David, the KING'S
SEAT. Jesus sat on it at age 12 [Lk 2:41-51]. Joseph of Arimathea had to adopt Jesus by Jewish law if he believed
Jesus to be legitimate, for Joseph was the male elder of the family and a brother had to adopt his sister's unheired
sons.
Had Joseph been an uncle of Mary the line of inheritance would have deviated away from Jesus: Mary would
not have had it to pass down to Jesus in the flesh. Rome's efforts to deify Mary deny Jesus the throne of David by
natural inheritance, contrary to Scripture [Lk 1:31-33].
So Joseph of Arimathea was obligated to adopt Jesus. The
adoption papers are quoted by Luke in chapter 3 of his gospel. Rome admits the genealogy there is that of Mary's side
of the family, but ignores the fact that the "Joseph" who is adopting Jesus is her brother by using the bizarre argument
that her husband acquired his wife's genealogy by adopting Jesus--even though the whole point of adoption was the reverse
situation: To give Jesus the adopting male's genealogy. Had this male been Joseph the "Carpenter" of the line of Jeconiah,
whose descendents were cursed from sitting upon the throne, Jesus would have been cut out of the royal inheritance
like all other men of Jeconiah's line. Only a BROTHER of Mary could adopt Jesus and keep Jesus in the royal line of succession
as the heir of David:
"When Jesus was about to be thirty years of age, He became by custom [by adoption] the son
of Joseph, the son of Heli..." [Lk 3:23, literal rendering]
All this means that Joseph of Arimathea had to be
married to a woman of very wealthy and high status. Only such a woman would be suitable to wed a man who held his
position. Nicodemus married his daughter Mary to such a man. Could Mary be Joseph's wife?
The gospels state that
Jospeh of Arimathea [the city of Matthew: See his genealogy] buried Jesus in his own UNUSED tomb in Jerusalem. Joseph
had acquired it RECENTLY, for no one in his family had died and ever been buried in it; yet the average age of death
in those days was under thirty, with many babies born dead. This can only mean that Joseph had obtained the site during
his life and did not inherit it.
The common way such a tomb would come into a family was as part of a DOWRY. But
if Joseph married Mary of BETHANY of the Mount of Olives, then the dowry tomb would have been on the Mount of Olives and
the site of the Crucifixion must have been near Bethany at the summit of the Mount. This is in fact the case [See
the link below to our discussion of "THE CRUCIFIXION"].
Now we can see that Mary was a woman of great importance.
To gain a tomb on the summit of Olivet was one of the most sought-after desires of every Jewish person, but hardly
anyone could achieve it. Joseph was given a piece of land when he married Mary that he would LITERALLY die for. But
if he were to divorce her, it would revert to Nicodemus.
THE FAMILY LINE OF MARY MAGDALENE
This man Nicodemus
was not only a member of the Sanhedrin, but a rabbi and Pharisee and a ruler of the people. All this makes him one of
the CHIEF SCRIBES. The house of Benjamin was given the right to keep the written genealogies of the priests and kings
to decide which persons were entitled to inherit. The Torah says Benjamin will "DIVIDE the SPOILS"-- that is, the
inheritiances of Israel.
Benjamin was allotted six seats on the Council. One of these seats was occupied by the
chief elde

WebmistressV.E.K. Sandels Delphi and its oracle
was one of the most sacred places in the ancient world. Situated in the breathtaking surroundings by the mythical Mt. Parnassus,
where Pan and the nymphs lived, it is still an enchanting site. Here, the ancient (and some modern) Greeks believed the canter
of the world was and here, the future of kings and commonmen was foretold. DelphiOverview History The Museum Mythology
General plan Getting there OverviewAlthough Delphi had been dedicated to many deities before him, Gaea, Themis and Phoebe,
Apollo is the god most connected to the place. According to mythology, Apollo killed the monster Python who guarded the site
and built the first temple here. He then went away to purify himself from the deed, and the Pythean games were held every
eight years to commemorate the event. Later, they were held every four years and were mainly musical competitions. The winner
was crowned with a wreath of laurel, since the Laurel was Apollos special tree.
Delphi had been defined as the canter
of the earth by Zeus, who one day let his two eagles fly around the earth and where they met - the center, Delphi, lay. A
stone was put at the point called Omphalos - the Navel - an can still be seen in the museum of Delphi.
Another myth
also tells us that it was here the human kind got a second chance. Zeus was sick and tired of humanity, its thievery, lies
and treachery, and decided to drown them all in a flood. The good man Deucalion had been warned by his father Prometheus and
had built an ark in good time. The flood drowned the earth, but Deucalion and his wife were safe in the ark, and when the
water started sinking, they landed on the top of Mt. Parnassos. Deucalion then went to the oracle to ask what to do next,
and the oracle told him to throw the earths bones behind him. He then took some stones which he interpreted to be the bones,
threw them over his shoulder, and new humans grew out of them.
Deucalion had a son with his wife, and he was to be
called Hellen ("Greek"). He, in his turn, became the father of three children. Aeolus, Dorus and Xythos, and the grandfather
of Ion and Achaios. These sons would all be the ancestors of the Greek tribes.
Heracles had also come to Delphi, but
with a wicked purpose: he wanted to steal the tripod Pythia sat on. The failed, but still a temple was built in Heracles'
honour.
Finally Dionysus also had to do with Delphi. He ruled here in Apollos place during the three months the latter
was away in the north. Then chaos ruled here, with enraged women, the maenads, tearing wild animals to pieces and everyone
in a constant state of drunkenness.Getting There Delphi can be reached by road. Many travel agencies in Athens offer daytrips
to the site, but you can also get here on your own. There are several hotels in the area if you want to stay."Though killed
I killed the killer; but even so he didn't go to Hades, it was I who died" Riddle from the Delphic Oracle The charioteer

by Homer, who calls it Pytho. There is evidence that there was a cult here in the Mycenaean period.
A temple toApollo
stood here in the 8th century BC, if not before. In the 7th century BC the area was already quite full of buildings and statues.
In the 6th century BC a big sphinx was made out of marble from Naxos and put here, as well as treasure houses for Athens,
Sicyon and Knidos.
It was also now that Delphi had been liberated from the Krisan state, and thus became autonomous.
The games and the sanctuary was from then on organised and controlled by the 12 citystates that had formed the Amphictyonic
League.
In 528 a terrible fire destroyed the old temple of Apollo. Almost all Greek citystates helped to rebuild it,
and in 505 a magnificent new temple stood here.
In the following century the Sifnian treasure house was built, and
after the battle of Marathon Athens also built a new one.
In 373BC an earthquake destroyed much of Delphi, including
the Apollo temple. Soon, s new collection began among the city states, and in 329BC it was finished. Here, the famous inscriptions
"Know yourself", "Keep the measure" and "E" were made. Pythia sat here and told the future through an incomprehensible mumble
that was then interpreted by the priests. This is also where the omphalos, the navelstone, stood as well as Dionysus'
tomb.
The theatre was built, but it was during the next century that it was rebuilt of stone by Eumenes II of Pergamon
so that the audience would actually have seats, and not just sat on the slopes. It could hold 5000 spectators. In AD390
the oracle was shut down by emperor Theodosius. 1892 French archaeologists started excavating the are, after the ancient
village Kastri, that was built on top of it, had been moved.
The Oracle
At first, the oracle could only be
consulted once a year, but as its reputation grew more and more pilgrims came, and more days were added to the agenda. During
the three months that Apollo was believed to be away, the oracle was silent. After going through purification rituals
and paying a certain tax, the pilgrim that would be allowed to consult the oracle could ask his question to Pythia. Pythia
was a woman from the village Delphi, and in most cases she was a young virgin. We do not know exactly in what state of mind
she was, but she was probably under the influence of some sort of narcotic substance. Tradition holds that fumes were coming
out of a crack in the ground, but no such crack has been found. After Pythia had spoken, the priests interpreted her words
to the pilgrim. The answers were always vague, and in this way the oracle was almost always right. This gave the priests great
political power, and their credibility was discussed even in ancient times. It is said that the fablewriter Aesop had called
them the "parasites of Apollo" and for this the priests killed him.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HistoryGeneral plan If you come to Delphi, you should not miss the museum. It has some amazing finds from the area, the
most famous being the Omphalos, the statue "The Charioteer" and the two sculptures of Cleobis and Biton. The Museum

Queen Scheherazade tells her stories to King Shahryar."Arabian Nights" redirects
here. For other uses, see Arabian Nights (disambiguation).
The Book of One Thousand and One Nights (Persian: هزار
افسانه Hezār Afsaneh or Hezār wa-Yek Shab, Arabic: كتاب
ألف ليلة و ليلة Kitāb 'Alf Layla wa-Layla;
also known as The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night, One Thousand and One Nights, 1001 Arabian Nights, Arabian Nights,
The Nightly Entertainments or simply The Nights) is a medieval Middle-Eastern literary epic which tells the story of Scheherazade
(Shahrzad in Persian), a Sassanid Queen, who must relate a series of stories to her malevolent husband, King Shahryar, to
delay her execution. The stories are told over a period of one thousand and one nights, and every night she ends the story
with a suspenseful situation, forcing the King to keep her alive for another day. The individual stories were created over
many centuries, by many people and in many styles, and they have become famous in their own right. Notable examples include
Aladdin, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor.
Contents [hide] [edit] History
The nucleus of the stories is formed by a Pahlavi Sassanid Persian book called Hazār Afsānah[1] ("Thousand Myths",
in Persian: هزارافسانه). During the reign of the Abbasid Caliph
Harun al-Rashid in the 8th century, Baghdad had become an important cosmopolitan city. Merchants from Persia, China, India,
Africa, and Europe were all found in Baghdad. It was during this time that many of the stories, which were originally folk
stories, are thought to have been collected orally over many years and later then compiled into a single book. The later compiler
and translator into Arabic is reputedly storyteller Abu abd-Allah Muhammed el-Gahshigar in the 9th century. The frame story
of Shahrzad seems to have been added in the 14th century. The first modern Arabic compilation, made out of Egyptian writings,
was published in Cairo in 1835.
[edit] Synopsis Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. See
also: List of stories within The Book of One Thousand and One Nights The story takes place in the Sassanid era and begins
with the Persian king Shahryar. The king rules an unnamed island "between India and China" (in modern editions based on Arab
transcripts he is king of India and China). When Shahryar discovers his wife plotting with a lover to kill him, he has the
pair executed. Believing all women to be likewise unfaithful, he gives his vizier an order to get him a new wife every night
(in some versions, every third night). After spending one night with his bride, the king has her executed at dawn. This practice
continues for some time, until the vizier's clever daughter Sheherazade ("Scheherazade" in English, or "Shahrastini", a Persian
name) forms a plan and volunteers to become Shahrayar's next wife. With the help of her sister Dunyazad, every night after
their marriage she spends hours telling him stories, each time stopping at dawn with a cliffhanger, so the king will postpone
the execution out of a desire to hear the rest of the tale. In the end, she has given birth to three sons, and the king has
been convinced of her faithfulness and revoked his decree.
The tales vary widely; they include historical tales, love
stories, tragedies, comedies, poems, burlesques and Muslim religious legends. Some of the famous stories Shahrazad spins in
many western translations are Aladdin's Lamp, the Persian Sindbad the Sailor, and the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves;
however Aladdin and Ali Baba were in fact inserted only in the 18th century by Antoine Galland, a French orientalist, who
claimed to have heard them in oral form a Maronite story-teller from Aleppo in Syria. Numerous stories depict djinn, magicians,
and legendary places, which are often intermingled with real people and geography; the historical caliph Harun al-Rashid is
a common protagonist, as are his alleged court poet Abu Nuwas and his vizier, Ja'far al-Barmaki. Sometimes a character in
Scheherazade's tale will begin telling other characters a story of his own, and that story may have another one told within
it, resulting in a richly layered narrative texture.
On the final (one thousand and first) night Sheherazade presents
the King with their three sons and she asks him for a complete pardon. He grants her this and they live in relative satisfaction.
Note: the narrator's standards for what consitutes a cliffhanger seem broader than in modern literature. While in
many cases a story is cut off with the hero in life danger or another kind of deep trouble, in some parts of the full text
Scheherazade stops her narration in the middle of an exposition of abstract philosophical principles or abstruse points of
Islamic theology, and in one case during a detailed description of human anatomy according to Galen - and in all these cases
turns out to be justified in her belief that the king's curiosity about the sequel would buy her another day of life.

end here. [edit] Editions
The book cover of Sir Richard Francis Burton edition. The work is made up of a collection
of stories thought to be from traditional Persian, Arabic, and Indian stories. The core stories probably originated in an
Iranic Empire and were brought together in a Persian work called Hazar Afsanah ("A Thousand Legends"). The Arabic compilation
Alf Layla (A Thousand Nights), originating about 850 AD, was in turn probably an abridged translation of Hezar Afsaneh. Some
of its elements appear in the Odyssey. The present name Alf Layla wa-Layla (literally a "A Thousand Nights and a Night", i.e.
"1001 Nights") seems to have appeared at an unknown time in the Middle Ages, and expresses the idea of a transfinite number
since 1000 represented conceptual infinity within Arabic mathematical circles.
The first European version (and first
printed edition) was a translation into French (1704 - 1717) by Antoine Galland from an earlier compilation that was written
in Arabic. This 12 volume book, Les Mille et une nuits, contes arabes traduits en français ("Thousand and one nights, Arab
stories translated into French") probably included Arabic stories known to the translator but not included in the Arabic compilation.
Aladdin's Lamp and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves appeared first in Galland's translation and cannot be found in the original
writings. He wrote that he heard them from a Syrian Christian storyteller from Aleppo, a Maronite scholar, Youhenna Diab,
whom he called 'Hanna'.
John Payne, Alaeddin and the Enchanted Lamp and Other Stories, (London 1901) gives details
of Galland's encounter with 'Hanna' in 1709 and of the discovery in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris of two Arabic manuscripts
containing Aladdin and two more of the 'interpolated' tales. He instances Galland's own experience to demonstrate the lack
of regard for such entertainments in the mainstream of Islamic scholarship, with the result that
…complete copies
of the genuine work were rarely to be met with, collections… and the fragmentary copies which existed were mostly in
the hands of professional story-tellers, who were extremely unwilling to part with them, looking upon them as their stock
in trade, and were in the habit of incorporating with the genuine text all kinds of stories and anecdotes from other sources,
to fill the place of the missing portions of the original work. This process of addition and incorporation, which has been
in progress ever since the first collection of the Nights into one distinct work and is doubtless still going on in Oriental
countries, (especially such as are least in contact with European influence,) may account for the heterogeneous character
of the various modern manuscripts of the Nights and for the immense difference which exists between the several texts, as
well in actual contents as in the details and diction of such stories as are common to all.
Perhaps the best-known
translation to English speakers is that by Sir Richard Francis Burton, entitled The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night
(1885). Unlike previous editions, his ten volume translation was not bowdlerized. Though printed in the Victorian era, it
contained all the erotic nuances of the source material, replete with sexual imagery and pederastic allusions added as appendices
to the main stories by Burton. Burton circumvented strict Victorian laws on obscene material by printing an edition for subscribers
only rather than formally publishing the book. The original ten volumes were followed by a further six entitled The Supplemental
Nights to the Thousand Nights and a Night which were printed between 1886 and 1888.
More recent versions are that
of the French doctor J. C. Mardrus, translated into English by Powys Mathers, and, notably, a critical edition based on the
14th century Syrian manuscript in the Bibliothèque Nationale, compiled in Arabic by Muhsin Mahdi and rendered into English
by Husain Haddawy, the most accurate and elegant of all to this date.
The Book of One Thousand and One Nights has
an estranged cousin: The Manuscript Found in Saragossa, by Jan Potocki. A Polish noble of the late 18th century, he traveled
the Orient looking for an original edition of The Book... but never found it. Upon returning to Europe, he wrote his masterpiece,
a multi-leveled frame tale.
[edit] Adaptations [edit] Film and Television
Mili Avital as Scheherazade
and Dougray Scott as Shahryar, in the ABC/BBC Miniseries Arabian Nights. There have been many adaptations of the Nights, for
both television and the big screen, with varying degrees of faithfulness to the original stories.
The atmosphere of
the Nights influenced such films as Fritz Lang's 1921 Der müde Tod, the 1924 Hollywood film The Thief of Bagdad starring Douglas
Fairbanks, and its 1940 British remake. It also influenced The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), the first surviving feature-length
animated film.
One of Hollywood's first feature films to be based on the Nights was in 1942, with the movie named
Arabian Nights. It starred Maria Montez as Scheherazade, Sabu Dastagir as Ali Ben Ali and Jon Hall as Harun al-Rashid. The
storyline bears virtually no resemblance to the traditional version of the Nights. In the film Scheherazade is a dancer, who
attempts to overthrow Caliph Harun al-Rashid and marry his brother. Unfortunately Scheherazade’s initial coup attempt
fails and she is sold into slavery, many adventures then ensue. Maria Montez and Jon Hall also starred in the 1944 film Ali
Baba and the Forty Thieves.
The 1980s "1001 Erotic Nights", starring Annette Haven as Scheherazade and John Leslie
as Shahryar, was supposedly the first X-rated movie with a million-dollar budget.
The most commercially successful
movie based on the Nights was Aladdin, the 1992 animated movie by the Walt Disney Company, which starred Scott Weinger and
Robin Williams. The film led to several sequels and a television series of the same name.
The Voyages of Sinbad have
been adapted for television and film several times, the most recent of which was in the 2003 animated feature Sinbad: Legend
of the Seven Seas, which starred Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Perhaps the most famous Sinbad film was the 1958 movie
The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, produced by the stop-motion animation pioneer Ray Harryhausen.
A recent well-received
television adaptation was the Emmy award winning miniseries Arabian Nights, directed by Steve Barron and starring Mili Avital
as Scheherazade and Dougray Scott as Shahryar. It was originally shown over two nights on April 30, and May 1, 2000 on ABC
in the United States and BBC One in the United Kingdom.
Other notable versions of the Nights include the famous 1974
Italian movie Il fiore delle mille e una notte by Pier Paolo Pasolini and the 1990 French movie Les 1001 nuits, which starred
Catherine Zeta-Jones as Scheherazade. There are also numerous Bollywood movies, such as Aladdin and Sinbad in which the two
named heroes get to meet and share in each other's adventures; in this version, the lamp's djin is female and Aladdin marries
her rather than the princess (she becomes a mortal woman for his sake.

If this were not such a serious subject, I would have found your choice of wording for
this title amusing. Hell, more specifically, the Lake of Fire, will be the domain of the devil insofar as he (Satan) will
be living there for eternity. Hell was created by God i.e., the God of Israel, the Father of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, the
Lord God Jehovah for Satan and his fallen angels. However, any man or woman will most certainly join Satan and his demonic
minions if they choose not to admit that they are sinners, repent and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior on this side of
death. It's as simple as that. So, whose domain is it, actually? Jesus said " I am He that lives, and was dead; and, behold,
I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and death. Revelation 1:18 |

One of these seats was occupied by the
chief elde
